Inspired by P4D reader Caitlin who asked us to help her in her search for an affordable "hutch" that can replace a broom closet and provide a lot of storage in a small space, we decided to explore the options of small space storage.

If you live in an apartment or don't have a lot of room to work with in your house, tall and thin furniture is your friend. They take up less room and maximize the height of a wall that tends to not get utilized. These storage options can make up for a lack of dining room, kitchen or bathroom storage. Depending on what you want to store, here are some good space saving options in various design styles to maximize your space and match your look.

Some good storage options for things you would want to display (wine glasses, dishes, books, etc.)

Liatorp from Ikea

Target's Celtic Baker's Rack.

Green Curio Cabinet from Pier1 Imports

Storage options with doors to hide away some of the unsightly clutter!

Contemporary Kitchen

This new modern contemporary kitchen Ulivo from Aster Cucine doesn’t need to show-off to make a statement. A subtle and refined visual language unites each piece of furniture, speaking volumes about contemporary style. A range of exciting elements: texture, color, material and light all work together to create the out-of-the-ordinary Ulivo kitchen. For example, the stainless steel backdrop to the cooking area is no ordinary stainless steel finish. Instead, it is rippled to contrast with the high-gloss finish of the kitchen storage units. Cool, calm green is sets the tone for the kitchen.

Modern white kitchen

kitchen, interior home design

In this kitchen, designer Richard Mishaan used a narrow green border as a design motif -- see how it bleeds from the walls to the curtains? The curtains and window seat feature a Donghia awning stripe (‘Kauai’ Sunbrella), and the ‘Pudding’ pendant light is by FontanaArte.

Classic all - white kitchen

When New York interior designer Victoria Hagan bought her house, “a real fixer-upper” in Connecticut, she could see it had serious potential. The kitchen, with its view of Long Island Sound and an enormous old stove, was a space to fall for. To increase all three, she raised the ceilings and installed new cabinets and Carrara marble countertops. The farm sink and faucet are from Waterworks; lighting, Urban Archaeology. This Euromobil design introduces new functional elements to the contemporary kitchen. Along with a combination of strong steel and warm wood, the Filanta design highlights versatility and functional imagination. An island can sometimes create lost space in a kitchen, but why not add a bench to island – creating an attached breakfast bar in the centre of the kitchen. The Filanta kitchen by Euromobil is designed for living, and creates a balance between functionality and style. More information [via] home interior design.

Beautiful sky blue kitchen

Maryland designer Dana Tydings helped a client design a kitchen around a barrel-vaulted ceiling, which a previous owner had painted like a sky studded with cumulus clouds. Rather than painting over the mural, she complemented it with similar colors on the cabinetry.
